Meet Richard Lam

Therapy shouldn't just be a place to vent. It should be a place where you gain the tools to change your life.

My Approach to Your Growth

Hello! I'm Richard Lam, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Mountain View, CA. Over the years, I've found that many people seeking therapy are tired of simply "talking about the past" week after week without seeing tangible changes in their daily lives.

That's why my practice is different. I believe therapy works best when it is an active, collaborative partnership. My goal is not just to provide a safe space for you to feel heard - though that is absolutely foundational - but to equip you with highly effective, evidence-based tools that you can use outside of our sessions.

As a Level 5 Certified Master TEAM-CBT Therapist and Trainer, I don't just practice advanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; I also train other clinicians in these methods. My deep specialization as a TEAM-CBT Ambassador and Educational Speaker at the Feeling Good Institute allows me to bring a structured, highly effective framework to our work together, ensuring we are actively moving you toward the life you want to live.

Education & Background

My foundation in psychology began with a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Davis. Driven by a desire to help individuals and families navigate life's complexities, I went on to earn a Master of Arts in Counseling, with an emphasis in Marriage, Family, and Children, from Palo Alto University. I am a proud member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT).

How We Work Together: The T.E.A.M. Framework

I practice advanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy created by Dr. David Burns, known as TEAM Therapy. Here is what that actually means for your progress in our sessions:

T

Testing (Tracking Growth)

We don't just guess if you are getting better. By evaluating your symptoms at the beginning and end of every single session, we ensure we are actually moving the needle and improving our success rate.

E

Empathy (Deep Connection)

Before we try to "fix" anything, you need to feel profoundly respected, accepted, and understood. This is a judgment-free zone where your emotional safety is my top priority.

A

Agenda Setting (You Drive)

Once you feel fully heard, we collaboratively decide exactly what you want to work on. You are never pushed. We make informed decisions together, treating your boundaries with the utmost respect.

M

Methods (Actionable Tools)

Once we have a target, we don't just talk; we use powerful, specialized tools to actively reduce symptoms of depression, quiet anxiety, and navigate complex relationship problems.
